There was generally good characterization and an interesting plot. The only downside is that the way the game autosaves it isn't guaranteed that you will discover that you have screwed up a case before you have lost the chance to go back and fix your mistake, so save often! I would definitely recommend this game.. Wow. I became almost immediately immersed in this game from the start. I've read the other reviews--almost all positive, although I understand where people get irritable when certain cultural or political views become a part of an adventure game...but for me, I've personally followed and happily played probably all of Francisco Gonzalez's games, even way back from freeware like "Back Door Man" and all of the "Ben Jordan" games. This game in particular showed his growth as a game developer, and like I said, drew me in to the plotline from the start. I loved the artwork, I loved being able to work my way through cases in my own time, even if my choices led to less than optimal outcomes. I enjoyed that it wasn't too linear, and I really grew fond of the main character(s), even having several laughs along the way, despite the fact that it was a "who-dunnit" murder mystery. I can't say enough complimentary things, really. I get picky with adventure games, and this is a MUST PLAY. Period.. Unexpected gem of a game.It contains well written mysteries that keeps you on your toes lead by great characters.Little selection pool during conversation makes the both story and relationships richer. It creates a fairly realistic environment that was effected by poverty, class discrimination, industrial revolution and superstitions. You learn to love the characters, feel sympathy about their troubles and try to solve them as the protagonist. The bitter-sweet ending was also a beautiful way to end what feels like a classic Sherlock Holmes-esque, novel.. Delightful point-and-click adventure. The graphics, setting (bar the steampunk side) and character remind more than fleetingly of the old Gabriel Knight (Sins of the Fathers, not the sequels). The creators managed to create an effortlessly sympathetic main character, which is not easy, and a nice group of supporting characters. The puzzles are not that difficult, but they're not frustratingly stupid either, and I like the idea that you have an array of choices to end a case with (even though, of course, only one is correct), with a hint of moral choices to make. Very nice voice acting too. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the alternate steampunk universe the game is set, not because I don't like steampunk per se, but because I find it slightly superfluous; I think the game could have easily worked in the real world setting with few adaptations. Still, it doesn't bother either, so it doesn't affect the enjoyable experience of the game in the slightest.. At least wait for a sale. This is not an adventure game. It's more like a (very slightly) interactive story. The only choices are speech options which are all so similar as to make no real difference which you choose. The art is very good for the style chosen. The voice acting is good. There just isn't much actual game and it's very linear. You go around talking to people, just clicking on all the options one by one except for the rare occasion when you have to choose a reply from a few almost identical replies. Then, you know who did it (I can't see how you could fail this) and finish the case and go to the next one. I finished the first case, hoping it would improve as I went. It didn't. If you think you'd enjoy it as interactive fiction, try it on sale. If you want an adventure game where you go around and investigate, look for clues, and actually do things, skip it.
